A Village Surrounded by Forest
Tree Service in Yellow Springs takes place next to some of the most significant woods in southwest Ohio. Just east of the village, Glen Helen Nature Preserve covers more than 1,000 acres, with regionally significant stands of old-growth forest where the oldest trees may be about 400 years old. Glen Helen was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1965 and includes 2.5 miles of the Little Miami River, a National Scenic River. Beyond it, John Bryan State Park's 752 acres and the Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve follow the river's gorge.
What that means for village yards
Many Yellow Springs residents care deeply about trees, and the first question we hear is often whether a tree can be saved. Often it can. Deadwood removal, selective thinning, cabling or a modest reduction can keep a valued tree in place for years. When removal is the honest answer, we explain why, and we can leave wood, chips or a habitat snag if that suits your goals.
Small lots, old houses
The village was founded in 1825 by William Mills and about 100 families following Robert Owen, and incorporated in 1856. It covers about 2.75 square miles. Many houses are older and close together, with big trees over porches, roofs and gardens. Work there is careful, rope-rigged and slow by design, so that nothing lands where it shouldn't.
An older community
The median age in Yellow Springs was 50.7 at the 2020 census, and 40.6% of households were single-person households. For many residents, tree work is something they have someone else do. We aim to make that simple: one visit, a clear written estimate, a scheduled day and full cleanup.
Our approach
- Save what can be saved, with pruning to ANSI A300 standards
- Explain clearly when a tree should come down, and why
- Leave wood, chips or a habitat snag when that suits you
- Protect gardens and beds during work
- Clean up completely afterward

Trees and gardens
Village yards in Yellow Springs often hold gardens as well as trees, and the two compete for light and root space. Thinning a tree's crown can let more sun reach beds without removing the tree. When a tree must come down near plantings, we plan drop zones and walking paths to keep damage to a minimum, and we ask you to point out plants you want protected before we begin.

Yellow Springs Questions
Can you leave part of a dead tree standing for wildlife?
Yes, when it's safe. If a dead tree is far enough from the house, paths and neighbors, we can reduce it to a tall stump, called a habitat snag, for woodpeckers and other wildlife.
Do you use chemicals on trees?
Our work is pruning, removal and stump grinding. If a tree needs a pesticide or fertilizer treatment, that requires a licensed applicator, and we'll tell you if we think it's worth looking into.
Can you work on trees in the village without big trucks on my lawn?
Yes. Most village work is done by climbing, with branches carried to the chipper on the street. We'll talk through where equipment will be before the job.
Do you work on properties near Glen Helen or John Bryan?
Yes, on private property. Trees on preserve or state park land are managed by those organizations.
Can you take down a tree and leave the wood for me to use?
Yes. We can leave logs in lengths you choose, firewood rounds or a pile of chips for paths and beds. Tell us when we visit, and it goes on the estimate.
What is cabling, and can it save a tree?
Cabling installs a flexible steel cable between major limbs to reduce the chance of splitting at a weak fork. It doesn't fix decay, but on a sound tree with a weak union, it can extend the tree's useful life. Cables should be inspected periodically.
