Northridge and Beyond

Tree Service in Harrison Township focuses on a compact area just north of Dayton. Most of the original township was annexed into the city of Dayton over the years. What's left covers about 9 square miles with more than 21,000 residents, including Northridge, a former census-designated place along North Dixie Drive between Stop Eight Road and Embury Park Road, reaching to the Great Miami River.

May 27, 2019

The EF4 tornado that crossed Trotwood moved through Northridge on its way to Old North Dayton and Riverside. NWS estimated peak winds of 170 mph and a path up to 0.6 mile wide, and its survey described thousands of trees with moderate to heavy damage along the route. Northridge neighborhoods lost many mature trees that night, and many of those still standing were damaged.

What we see now

The trees on many Northridge lots fall into three groups: young trees planted after 2019, survivors with healed-over wounds and sprout growth, and trees that were untouched. Young trees need structural pruning. Survivors need a careful look for decay. Untouched trees need the same routine care as anywhere else. We'll go through them with you.

Along the Great Miami

The southern edge of the Northridge area reaches the Great Miami River. Riverside trees here grow in deep, moist soil and include big cottonwoods and sycamores. If you live near the river, look for root exposure or new lean after high water.

Planting the next generation

Many Northridge yards replanted after 2019, and others still have open spots. When planting, choose species that fit the space at full size, keep large trees well away from the house and lines, and mix species so one pest can't wipe out the canopy, as emerald ash borer did with ash across Ohio. Water young trees through their first summers, keep mulch off the trunk and plan a first structural pruning a few years after planting.

Storms besides tornadoes

Tornadoes get attention, but most tree damage in the Miami Valley comes from straight-line thunderstorm winds and from heavy wet snow and ice that load branches in winter. In 2008, the remnants of Hurricane Ike brought gusts over 75 mph to Dayton and left hundreds of thousands of Dayton Power & Light customers without power. Deadwood, decay and weak forks are what fail first, so routine pruning helps.

Harrison Township Questions

Do you work in Northridge?

Yes. We work throughout Harrison Township, including Northridge, and the nearby parts of Dayton.

The young tree I planted after the tornado has two leaders. Should I fix it?

Yes, and now is the best time. Reducing one leader so the other dominates sets up a strong trunk for the future. It's a quick job on a young tree.

Is it too late to remove a damaged tree from 2019?

No. If a tree has declined since, removal is still the right move. Damaged trees can get more dangerous over time as decay spreads.

Do you remove trees close to houses on small lots?

Yes. We take them down in sections and lower each piece with ropes to protect the house and neighbors.

Can you grind several stumps in one visit?

Yes. Many owners have us grind all their stumps in one trip, including old ones. The estimate lists each stump.

Can you remove a tree whose roots have lifted my sidewalk?

Yes, if removal is what you want. If you'd rather keep the tree, sometimes a root can be pruned or the walk rerouted, but cutting large roots near the trunk can weaken the tree. We'll explain the trade-off.

Is the estimate free?

Yes. We visit, look at the trees and leave a written estimate at no charge.

Do you work near the Great Miami in the southern part of Northridge?

Yes. Near the river we watch for soft ground and exposed roots, and we plan equipment routes so lawns and banks aren't torn up.
