Englewood and Its River
Tree Service in Englewood starts with the Stillwater River. The city was founded in 1841 as Harrisburg, and early settlers shipped grain and bacon down the Stillwater by flatboat. After the 1913 flood, the Miami Conservancy District built Englewood Dam, completed in 1919: 110 feet high, 4,716 feet long, with a basin covering about 6,350 acres when full. Englewood MetroPark and Aullwood sit in that river landscape, and the trees along it are some of the largest in the northern suburbs.
Aullwood's sugar bush
Aullwood Audubon Center, about ten miles northwest of downtown Dayton, began in 1957 when Marie Aull donated land to the National Audubon Society. Its 200-acre sanctuary includes a 15-acre sugar bush of maples, beech and cherry, the same native trees that show up in many Englewood back yards. Sugar maples and beech are long-lived but sensitive to root damage from construction and soil compaction, so we keep heavy equipment off their root zones whenever possible.
An older population
Census QuickFacts reports that 23.8% of Englewood residents are 65 or older. That's one of the higher shares in the area, and it shapes what people ask us for. Many want the heavy work done for them, on a schedule they can plan around, and they want cleanup handled completely. We do the climbing and cutting, haul away brush, and leave the yard raked.
Englewood yard checklist
- Are there dead branches over walkways, the driveway or the roof?
- Is a tree close enough to scrape the house in wind?
- Do you have an ash that is thinning or has bark falling off?
- Is a tree leaning more than it used to, or is soil lifting at the base?
- Are there stumps you'd like gone so you can mow or plant?
If you answered yes to any of these, call (937) 884-1695 or use the form. We'll look and leave a written estimate. Get a free estimate
Which trees fit near a house
If you're replacing a removed tree, choose a species and spot that will fit at full size. A large shade tree needs room, ideally well away from the house, wires and the driveway. Smaller species fit closer in. We're happy to talk through options when we visit.
Timing tree work
Most pruning of healthy deciduous trees can be done any time, but late fall through winter has advantages: the structure is easy to see without leaves, insect and disease activity is low, and frozen ground protects lawns. Oaks are best pruned while dormant to reduce oak wilt risk. Dead or hazardous trees should be dealt with whenever they're found, regardless of season.

Englewood Questions
My sugar maple is losing leaves early and the top looks thin. What's wrong?
Early leaf drop and a thin top on sugar maple often point to root stress from drought, compaction or past construction. It can also be girdling roots. We can look at the tree and the soil around it.
Can you prune my tree without damaging the lawn?
Yes. For pruning, we usually climb and carry branches to the chipper at the curb. Heavy equipment rarely needs to go on the lawn.
Do you remove trees near the Stillwater?
Yes, on private property. We plan carefully on soft ground and near banks. Trees on Conservancy District or MetroParks land are under those agencies, so check with them.
How long does a typical removal take?
Many single-tree removals in a residential yard take part of a day, including cleanup. Large trees in tight spots, or work that needs a crane, take longer. The estimate gives you a realistic idea.
Will you leave firewood if I want it?
Yes, if you ask. We can cut trunk wood into rounds and stack it where you'd like. Brush is chipped and hauled away unless you want the chips for beds.
Can you remove a tree near my deck without damaging it?
Yes. We lower limbs on ropes rather than dropping them, and protect the deck surface with plywood if needed.
