Union on the Stillwater
Tree Service in Union serves a small city with a river on one side and open country on the other. Union was founded in 1806, took its name in 1816 and became a city in 1982. The Stillwater River runs along its east side, and the city straddles Montgomery and Miami counties. With about 6,900 residents on roughly 8.3 square miles, Union has a mix of neighborhoods, larger lots and rural ground.
The Stillwater corridor
Trees along the Stillwater are mostly bottomland species, fast-growing and big. After heavy rain, soils near the river stay wet, and saturated roots grip less firmly. A large tree that leans toward a house after a wet spell, or that shows cracked or lifted soil at its base, should be looked at quickly. We check root plates and lean on trees in low ground before recommending any work.
Storm patterns
The 2019 Memorial Day storms produced tornadoes across the area, including the EF3 near West Milton, to the north, where NWS reported that nearly every property along Ditmer and South Shiloh Roads sustained tree damage. Summer thunderstorms with strong straight-line winds are more common than tornadoes, and they're the bigger risk most years. The trees that fail first are the ones with deadwood, decay or weak forks.
A practical approach
Union homeowners usually want a few things: deadwood out over the house, a dead tree removed before it falls, and the stumps ground so they can mow. We keep it simple. We look at the trees, tell you what we'd do and why, and put it in writing with the cleanup spelled out.

Rural lots and fence rows
Outside the center of town, many Union properties have room for big trees, fence rows and small woods. Those trees need less frequent attention than yard trees over a house, but dead ash and storm-broken trees along fences and lanes still need to come out before they fall. We can clear fence rows, remove dead trees, chip brush and leave wood stacked if you'd like to keep it.
Emerald ash borer
Ash trees were common in yards and fence rows across Ohio. Emerald ash borer larvae feed under the bark in winding galleries, cutting off water and nutrients, and in an infested area untreated ash generally die within about ten years. A standing dead ash becomes brittle quickly, which makes climbing and felling it more dangerous. If you see D-shaped exit holes or bark peeling away on an ash, plan to deal with it soon.
Union Facts
- Two counties. Union lies in both Montgomery and Miami counties; it was founded in 1806, named Union in 1816 and incorporated as a city in 1982.
- Stillwater River. The Stillwater River runs along Union's east side; the 2020 census counted 6,859 residents and 2,877 housing units, 3.6% vacant.
- Nearby 2019 tornado. The May 27, 2019 West Milton EF3 (140 mph, 10.8 miles long) crossed Darke and Miami counties to the north; NWS reported tree damage at nearly every property along Ditmer and South Shiloh Roads.

Union Questions
Do you work on both the Montgomery and Miami County sides of Union?
Yes. We work throughout the city and the surrounding rural areas in both counties.
My tree near the river is leaning more after rain. Is that urgent?
It can be. If the soil at the base is cracked or lifted on the side away from the lean, the roots may have shifted. Keep people away from the fall zone and call (937) 884-1695.
Can you remove a tree and grind the stump the same day?
Often, if the stump is accessible and utilities are marked. If not, we schedule grinding separately.
What causes most tree damage in storms here?
Straight-line winds from summer thunderstorms. They break deadwood and weak forks first, so pruning those out ahead of time is the most effective prevention.
Do you clear brush along fence lines?
Yes. We remove small trees and brush along fences and lanes, chip the material and haul it away or leave the chips if you want them.
How do I know if my tree is an ash?
Ash have compound leaves with five to eleven leaflets arranged in opposite pairs on the twig, and mature bark with a diamond-shaped ridge pattern. If you're unsure, we can identify it when we visit.
Can you work on a tree that hangs over the road?
We can prune or remove trees on your property that overhang the road, with traffic control as needed. If the tree is in the road right-of-way, check with the city or county first.
